The reeds contain small pores that allow the fragrance oil to be absorbed and travel towards the top half of the stick. As the oil reaches the part of the reed that’s outside of the bottle, it evaporates and releases the scent molecules into the air. As a result, reed diffusers provide a constant, fresh scent that’s especially great for places like bathrooms and foyers, where you want to maintain that wonderful smell all the time without the need to keep an eye on a lighted candle.

Once the diffuser reed is fully saturated, it releases the scented solution into the air. 

Rattan diffuser reeds: All-natural rattan reed sticks are the classic option for reed diffusers. Rattan reed sticks are naturally porous and draw the scented diffuser base solution up through multiple cells that look like tiny straws bunched together.For the best fragrance throw, rattan reed sticks should be cut with a sharp blade so the ends don't split or fray. A clean cut means they can easily carry liquid to the top of the reed, so look for rattan diffuser sticks that are precisely cut when shopping for rattan reed sticks.

A mixture of oils – depending on what scent you’re looking for – is poured into a small container. Reed sticks – long, thin strips of rattan wood or synthetic polyamide – are then put into the container also.In a reed diffuser, the mixture is absorbed into the sticks in a process known as capillary action. When the oils soak into the reeds, it diffuses into the air through evaporation – giving the room its fragrance.The natural process doesn’t involve harmful aerosols or burning products to create smells, making it a safer and more sustainable alternative to candles and spray cans for classrooms, offices and households.

Place your diffuser near the middle of the room. Oil diffusers will release a fine mist of water to diffuse the oils around your room. Place your diffuser near the center of your chosen room to let the oil distribute evenly around the space. Keep it on a flat surface to prevent anything from spilling or falling over while your diffuser is running.[1]Put a towel down underneath the diffuser to catch any excess water while the diffuser runs. If the towel remains dry after the first few times using it, it probably isn’t needed.You’ll also need a power outlet nearby if your diffuser needs to be plugged in.

Remove the cap with a bottle opener.Place your reed diffuser somewhere suitable in your home in a spot where it won't be knocked over or investigated by curious children or pets.Untie the reeds sticks and place them in the bottle's oil and allow them to sit for one hour. By the end of the hour, you should start to notice the sticks slowly absorbing the oil.  Carefully, flip the reeds upside down (recommended to do so over a sink) and place back into the bottle to saturate the top part of the reeds that stick out above oil level. This helps to speed up the process of the oil soaking up from the bottom diffusing through the entire reed. Expect a light fragrance to start perfuming your room within 24 hours.Place a coaster or similar underneath to prevent any possible ring stains from oil sliding down the bottle after flipping the reeds. This is especially important for porous surfaces like timber or concrete. If in doubt, use a coaster!

Keep in mind that this will mean the oil is absorbed at a faster rate, so you’ll have to replace it more often.Once the aroma starts to fade, flip over the reeds to expose the more saturated ends. Do this over a sink or trash can to catch any oil drips.If you notice your reed diffuser is getting low on oil, let it evaporate completely before refilling. It’s better to start with fresh oil than to add it to old oil. Wash out the bottle with a bit of soap and water and let it dry completely (otherwise the water will dispel the oil). Then, refill the bottle using fresh oil and add new reeds to it.On a similar note, don’t mix the fragrance oil with water in an attempt to dilute it and make it last longer. The oil and water will separate and make the reeds warp.Place your reed diffuser in an area with good air circulation, such as a hallway with high foot traffic, for maximum scent.
