HOW TO SPOT A GOOD QUALITY REED DIFFUSER

Reed diffusers and candles seem to be becoming ever more popular these days, which makes it harder to spot the good quality ones from the not so good ones, even the price might not give away the quality of the product and the ingredients used. Below we have answered a few frequently asked questions to help you spot the good-uns. How do reed diffusers work?

Each rattan reed contains about 20 ‘channels’ (kind of like honeycomb) that run the length of the reed. These channels draw up the oil to the top of the reeds which is then diffused into the air through evaporation, leaving your room smelling beautiful. 

How often should I flip the reeds?

When you start to notice the scent is fading we recommend you turn the reeds. This is generally around once a week but external factors do play a part in this (see below).

How often should I replace my reeds?

Over time, the reeds can become clogged with dust and old oil and should be replaced. However, before replacing, make sure you flip them to see if this helps bring out the scent. If this doesn’t work, your reeds are probably clogged and in need of replacement. You should also use new reeds when you switch to a new scent, whether they are clogged or not. 

What reeds should I buy?

Rattan reeds are known to work the best and give you the best results. They are environmentally friendly and will soak up the oils better than any other type of reeds.

What should I do if the scent doesn’t seem to be diffusing?
Flip the reeds over in the bottle exposing the ‘wet’ ends to the air. If the reeds have permanently stopped diffusing (Due to clogging with dust for example) then simply replace with new reeds.

Can I reuse my reeds?

No. Once the reeds have been used you cannot then re-use them for another scent. The oil you previously used will have been absorbed into the reeds meaning the new oils won’t be soaked up and diffused properly. Or alternatively, the new and old scents could mix and produce undesirable combinations, resulting in both being ruined. 

Where should I put my reed diffuser?

Where you place your diffuser is really your decision but to get the best results, you really want to be putting it in a high traffic area where the fragrance will disperse throughout your home with good air circulation. Another great place for your diffuser is just inside the room near the most frequently used door so you pick up the scent as you enter the room. In many cases, think of a diffuser as a bouquet of flowers, you’ll smell the fragrance as you walk by, but it won’t necessarily fill the room with fragrance so you want it to be in a place with good air flow so you get good wafts as you walk past.

How long do reed diffusers last?

There are many external factors that contribute to how long your oil will last for. Factors such as – fans, air conditioning, open windows, heating, closed/open doors, etc. You should make sure your reed diffuser isn’t too close to any of these to ensure you get the best results. However as a general guide, if used in appropriate conditions it could last you up to 12 weeks.

Can I use any glass bottle to make my own diffuser?

No. You want to make sure the glass bottle isn’t too big and the neck is just big enough to fit in your reeds. If the bottles neck is to big, the oil will evaporate too quickly. You also want to ensure the reeds stick out the top of your bottle by at least 3 inches so that the oils diffuse into the air properly.  

Can I dilute the oil with water?

No. Oil and water do not mix at all. You’ll find by doing this the oil and water will separate and all you will end up with are warped reeds and it may even ruin the oil that’s left in the bottle. There is no need to mix them or dilute them with anything.

How do you spot a good reed diffuser from a bad one?

The main thing here will be the price. You really do get what you pay for. A good diffuser will be around £20 or above, will have rattan reeds and be in a glass bottle. Also, another way to tell how good the diffuser is will be by the oils they use. If the manufacturer states ‘non-VOC’ or ‘non volatile organic compounds’, then this means that this a 3rd generation reed diffuser refill oil, which is the best type you can get as it is both healthy and long-lasting.
